2014 chevrolet silverado 1500 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new silverado aims for high country. introductionthe 2014 chevrolet silverado is the next generation of chevrolet's best-selling vehicle. Although some things look and sound familiar, like the three engines that are all-new despite being the same size as their predecessors, virtually everything has evolved to the next level or been replaced. substantial bodywork and a larger grille for cooling match a more imposing facade with better aerodynamic properties, while the frame underneath the 2014 silverado has been stiffened despite a 30-pound weight loss. By most measures, the 2014 silverado is lighter than the 2013 model, but it hauls and tows more than before. the 2014 chevrolet silverado comes with a roomier cabin with more luxury and safety features in a stylish new design. There's more room up front, and 2014 silverado crew cabs offer more space in back than previously. This generally improves rollover crash performance, makes a quieter, less squeak-prone interior and is easier to load in tight quarters. Often reserved for the thirstiest or most expensive engines on some trucks, these come standard on every 2014 silverado. the new 4. 3-liter v6 is standard on every cab/bed combo. At 285 horsepower and 305 pound-feet of torque it rates just 30 less (of each) than last year's 5. 3-liter v8 and out-grunts most competitor base v6s. the new 5. 3-liter v8 is rated at 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. That's right in line with ford's 5-liter v8, and 2014 silverado crew cabs with the 5. 3-liter v8 match or better competitors for top payload and towing ratings. The 2014 silverado uses electric power steering. the new silverado drives like a more refined version of the last one, even though it will tow more, go quicker or get better mileage. A very quiet cabin means happier passengers and less fatigue for owner/operators, with the double cab likely to show the most improvement. the only thing we see lacking in the new silverado is that elusive intangible that grabs people. Chasing power and fuel economy chevrolet used different technologies than ford's ecoboost (though gm's direct-injection turbocharged car engines preceded ecoboost by years). And the new silverado doesn't offer the flashy 8-speed automatic or optional air suspension of the ram. The 5. 3-liter v8 is optional on all cabs. The 6. 2-liter v8 is available on double cab and crew cab models. silverado wt is the base work truck 23,590). Silverado crew cab 1wt 32,710) and 2wt 34,764) are similarly equipped. silverado crew cab lt 35,260) upgrades to a cloth 40/20/40 front seat with locking storage underneath, leather-wrap steering wheel with audio controls, 17-inch aluminum wheels, and ez-lift and lower tailgate. silverado crew cab lt z71 36,850) adds off-road suspension calibration with rancho monotube shocks, hill-descent control, all-terrain tires, locking rear differential, skid plate, fog lamps, tow hooks, and a z71 appearance package. Silverado crew cab ltz z71 40,910) adds the z71 equipment. Navigation is optional. optional equipment is extensive, often progressive (require this, must order that, etc.) and model-limited. A few examples: tri-coat white metallic paint 995), integrated trailer brake controller 230), 5. 3-liter v8 895), locking differential 395), upgrade wheels in tires in 17, 18 and 20-inch sizes, in-bed led lighting 60), leather 1,095), towing package, snow-plow package, navigation, moonroof. A choice of rear axle ratios is available, including 3. 08 and 3. 42. safety features on all silverado models include dual front airbags, front side airbags, side-curtain airbags, and electronic stability control with trailer sway control. Options include park assist, rearview camera, forward collision and lane departure warnings. walkaroundteasing the bigger-is-better trend, the all-new 2014 chevrolet silverado looks bigger than the last one but is virtually identical in exterior dimensions; for example, it is one-tenth of an inch wider. The most obvious changes are up front and the rear doors. a taller grille, with more chrome as price rises, and revised bumper allow more powertrain cooling, but with fewer pieces and tighter fits, more aerodynamic than before. The new silverado is instantly identifiable as a chevy even if not wearing the big badge. High country's painted bumper loses it, but a chrome step bumper is available. Most versions offer leds under the side rails of the bed, activated by the shower-head bed light switch, for illumination beneath bed covers. A towing mirror option will be available but was not seen nor evaluated. myriad trims, chrome packages, three wheel diameters, 10 tire choices and plenty of stickers yield many appearance permutations, even before adding accessories. The only parts that might have been pulled straight from the 2103 are the shift lever and some door switches. a bi. 2014 chevrolet impala review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Originally launched as a 1958 model, the impala name boasts a long, storied history. Though of late it was often dismissed as a mediocre rental car, the impala is back with a vengeance, sporting a sophisticated design, high-quality interior and spot-on driving dynamics. chevrolet is now calling the five-passenger impala a full-size sedan, though it was previously classified as a midsize. The 2014 impala is front-wheel drive and shares gm's epsilon platform with the buick lacrosse, buick regal, cadillac xts and chevrolet malibu. three engine choices range from powerful to practical. General motors' familiar direct injection 3. 6-liter v6 is the beefiest of the bunch, with 305 horsepower and 264 pound-feet of torque. A 2. 5-liter ecotec inline-4 makes 196 hp and 145 lb.-ft., while a 2. 4-liter inline-4 with gm's eassist mild hybrid system is good for 182 hp and 172 lb.-ft. All variants use gm's 6-speed hydra-matic transmission. The v6 will roll off the assembly line first, followed 2. 5-liter 4-cylinder, with the eassist version expected a few months after that. epa fuel economy ratings for the v6 are 19/29 mpg city/highway. By way of comparison, the old impala got an epa-estimated 18/29 mpg with its standard 3. 5-liter v6 and 17/27 mpg with the bigger, 3. 9-liter v6. better aerodynamics help the 2014 impala with fuel economy, in part aided by new wind blockers positioned in front of the tires, which look like mud flaps put on the wrong way. Impala ltz comes standard with the safety features found in the lt advanced safety package. Options on the ltz include a comfort and convenience package 1,035), which adds ventilated front seats, a heated leather steering wheel, memory power steering column, seats and mirrors; auto-dimming rearview and driver's side mirrors. Navigation 795) must be paired with the comfort and convenience package. The bose premium audio system 700) is also available. A rearview camera is optional and can help the driver spot a small child when backing up. Collision mitigation braking, rear cross traffic alert, lane departure warning and side blind zone alert are optional. walkaroundthe design of the 2014 impala is nothing like chevrolet's done before. It oozes sophistication and quality, attributes that don't easily come to mind with the outgoing generation. The front grille is stretched horizontally, giving it a broad, unique look while keeping chevrolet's signature dual-port look. Round headlamp bezels are evocative of german luxury cars. Fog lamp housings are short and wide, nearly mimicking the shape of the headlamp housings above. from the side, a high, deep belt line cuts straight across from the top of the wraparound headlamp housing to the rear door handle. A sharp arcing character line starts in the rear door, flows high over the rear fender, and straight into the top of the rear tail lamp lens. Bright trim around windows and across rocker panels on the ltz model add class, and optional 20-inch wheels give the impala an almost show car-like quality. Standard 18-inch wheels on lt models and 19-inch alloys on ltzs still look good, if not quite as impressive. the wide, horizontal theme continues in back. Tail lamps start tall on the outer edges and narrow as they point inward. They have a raised detail that are not only visually interesting, but serve as aerodynamic aids to keep air flowing off the vehicle, rather than around it. Small touches like these help with fuel economy and with reducing wind noise in the cabin. The rear bumper is big and beefy, and exposed exhaust tips on ltz models have a chrome-like finish with an almost rectangular shape. interiorthe cabin of the 2014 impala is attractive and comfortable, with very good fit and finish and materials quality. the center stack is well laid out and has many controls without using an overwhelming number of buttons. Climate control knobs are large and easy to see, with the temperature digitally displayed inside the large circular dials. there's lots of storage space for drinks, accessories and snacks. A little cubby in front of the center console storage fits a mobile phone. Door pockets will fit an average-sized water bottle perfectly. seats are roomy, supportive and comfortable. Front passengers have lots of knee and legroom thanks to a pushed-back glove compartment and instrument panel. Front legroom is 45. 8 inches, a 3. 5-inch increase over the old impala. Concave doors give more space, sometimes too much depending on the size of the driver or passenger. Smaller drivers might not be able to reach the armrests with their hands properly on the steering wheel. rear passengers have plenty of space, too. Concave seatbacks reduce cramping around the knee and leg area, and foot room was adequate. Legroom measures 39. 8 inches, 2.
